Activity 5 : Discussion

1. Which would you rather have a handheld computer or a tablet computer? Why?

I would rather have the handheld computer (Laptop) rather than a table because, first of all the laptop most of the times have better specs than that of a tablet. Tablet is designed for most of the common people that enjoy some of its nifty features. However with a laptop, since imp a hardcore gamer and an aspiring model designer, I can do almost everything I want. The tablets limited options of software are what make it difficult for me to enjoy it so I’ll stick with quality rather than portability.

2. If cost were not an issue, describe the characteristics of your ideal computer. What would you use it for? Which operating system would you want it to run?

I would DEFINITELY go for high end spec computer, but since I’m not really that picky, here would be the specs for my ideal computer as of now:

Processor

I5 4500 3.60 GHz

Memory

Video Card - 4 GB
Ram - 8 GB
HDD - 1 TB

With these, I already achieved 3 of the most important things I need. Speed, Power and Storage.

The rest doesn't even matter to me as long everything mentioned above are met or better if they go beyond. For now i would go for windows 7 OS since the windows 8 is still quite buggy due to possibly hurried development and takes up more ram than 7 does. The first thing I would use it for is, of course, GAMES! And the second would be to learn designing. It’s just that really, but nothing less than that.

3. Define Software as a Service. Discuss some of the pros and cons of using software as a service.

Software is one of the most common services in the world; some countries even depend solely on software to strive like Japan for instance. There are a lot of pros and cons to having software’s as services. One of the pros is that the work speed is increased dramatically since computers are able to do computations far beyond normal human capabilities. Another is that software is most likely to be less faulty and naturally, manpower required is set to a minimum. However there are also the obvious disadvantages. First of all software is more vulnerable on attackers, there’s also the fact that relying on software’s all the time may reduce or degrade natural human abilities. And this may also be a double-edge sword with the economy, the systems are a lot faster and need little to no man power at all, then most people would have no more jobs. That’s just an example of the pros and cons but I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more.

4. Why is an organization that employs centralized processing likely to have a different management decision-making philosophy than an organization that employs distributed processing?

A centralized process is and a distributed process is different in more than one ways. First of all this affects the process of transactions itself so it may have a difference with each other. One isn’t particularly better than the other since its just based on the scale of the company's transactions and since of course it involves the transactions of the company, naturally it would result in a difference in decision making philosophy where some process are present or not in the other.

5. Social networks are being widely used today. Describe how this technology could be used in a business setting. Are there any drawbacks or limitations to using social networks in a business setting?

Social networks are widely used by everyone nowadays. It’s easy to know about the latest news and updates to almost everything you need to know. Using this technology can lead to several advantages of a company and here is the reason why.

First of all a social network naturally has a steady amount of audience. With this the advantage of market advertising is the most common way to gain in a social network. After all, this is a place where people gather thoughts, actions, products, stories etc. A social network can be a great companion for your company if you ever have one. With one, you can always invite your costumers to just go in this website and visit the company’s profile then increasing the popularity of the shop.

After gaining more popularity then your profile may now be a vessel for other companies and ask you for advertisement and even partnerships. That is one way of exploiting social networks on the business perspective.

6. One of the key issues associated with the development of a Web site is getting people to visit it. If you were developing a Web site, how would you inform others about it and make it interesting enough that they would return and tell others about it?

The natural way to inform is of course through advertising, though it could cost a lot of money but I’m pretty sure that you would gain back the loss ones your web site grows popular. Other is by inviting some companies to do partnership with yours with advertising. You could also make a website or a blog to introduce it or you could simply invite who you know and make them spread the news.

Activity 3 : SCRUM & Waterfall Methodology

Waterfall Methodology

> The enrollment system can come in many ways depending on the school in question. Using the waterfall method, we need to make sure of the requirements and plan the sequence of the transaction. First we will identify what are the students required to do before enrolling. Do they need a birth certificate? Do they need a 2x2 picture? After this particular process what are they supposed to do next? That is what we will need to figure out in the requirements process.

After which is the designing, it can first be a prototype of a framework that portrays the systems methods and processes one after another. After the designing, we would naturally go to the coding phase which can be divided into 2 parts: Coding & Debugging. Depending on the testers, this process may repeat until the system is functioning as the users would want them to but since this is a waterfall model then it might not be the case as the waterfall model is designed specifically to do the processes step by step without the need for going back.

And lastly we have the verification; since the debugging stage is done during the development process then it is now ready for the verification process. Should the verification process turn out acceptable for the users then it is possible that the developed system is already to be implemented. However if its not then the WHOLE process needs to be started again. After a successful verification, the system is now implemented, maintained and in most cases updated for the better service for the users.

SCRUM Methodology

> The SCRUM Methodology is a team effort method so it is only natural for it to have 2 or more members. With this said, for a simple enrollment system the following staff might be required for developing this system

1. Team Leader

The team leader is in charge of organizing the team, it might even be better if the leader had background knowledge in all of the possible roles of the SCRUM team so that he can manage the team well and guide them throughout the process. The team leader is also the one that, in most cases knows the company and the system that it wants to be done.

2. System Analyst

The system analyst is responsible for identifying the requirements, processes and transactions required for the system. In this case, the system analyst should know the basic process of the enrollment system as well as the other possibilities such as irregular students or transferees. Basically, whatever the analyst has gathered will be the heart of the system making them a very vital part of the development of a system.

3. Programmers

The programmers are the body and mind of the system, with the data gathered from the system analysis they create a system to provide the people. These ones are responsible for the making of the system itself with the help of a few people especially the testers.

4. Testers

These people are responsible for checking the systems for potential errors that may either harm the users or crash the system. Testers are the most important members of the team since they are mostly the ones that uses the system. What they say is what the programmers usually debug so that the system becomes perfect for the company. Also, these people usually work in the company that you are making the system for.

If the team execute the task given to them then they may develop the best software possible for the company. There are also other part of the team but they may be to be not part of the development team. These people are
- Product Owner
- Users
- Personnel

Team Activity 1 : Technology Infusion and Difusion

Interview: Maam Ruby Carino

The most common way to keep current with the latest technology and other information is through seminars. It can be in done many different ways and the topics can be in any terms as well but since this is the IT department then the seminars mostly focus more on the technical aspects such as software’s, programs or technology in general. The seminars are most often divided between teachers and students and at rare cases joined together.

The seminars ranges from application making, software programming, multimedia, advance technology and many others to aid the research and development of not just the department but the institution itself. SPC's IT department aims to serve the students better by making the schools website and accessibility to their information such as grades. The department is also responsible for the schools systems the help serve the institution better such as making a better enrollment system or automatic prompt to inform conflict of schedules.

As for the institutions technologies, from security to education purposes, SPC has it. They have CCTV's installed at the school, projectors at the classrooms with proper air conditioning, and even a communication lab and a computer laboratory for the students to hone their skills to their full potential. As for the course IT itself, the way to keep up with the teaching and research developments is mostly done via thesis, to let the students know the current business flows possible for any company to deal with and as well as to prepare them for their upcoming work as IT Professionals in the near future.

Interview: Sony Enterprises

>Infusion

Sony enterprises focus their attention on the audio visuals that most of today’s generations are fond of. Their signature appliance is their infamous LCD and LED TV technology. Their technology however isn’t all about TV's. As for the company’s infusion, it does not only compose of the TV but other Audio Visual devices as well like headphones and speakers. However the technology is mostly the same even in different forms so the technology infusion is compact. An example of this is the DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) which is spread through most of their audio output technologies like the HI-FI. This technology enables the speakers to make a clean rip of the output audio before producing an output and is used in every audio output devices that the company has providing better audio quality experience for the user no matter what device they pick.

Though Sony’s infusion is compact, it still provides variety of devices with different uses and aspects. Their lab also tries to develop new technologies and apply them to their gadgets, like the LCD TV for instance. They also try to provide both of technologies so that the customers have a wide range of selection to their devices and take what is to their liking. They also have a lot more technologies like the Blu-ray and HD LED Screen television which is capable of rendering high quality images from 720p to 1080p.

The technology permeates at a constant degree depending on the customers as said by our interviewee. The technology however yields the same results of high quality audio visual output for the best experience possible for the customer. Therefore we can say that the infusion is tight since it focuses the study of technology more on the audio visuals and rarely present anything outside this genre.

>Diffusion

The companies’ diffusion however, is quite dependant depending on the technology being developed in their lab (Which they have not discussed to us). An example of this is the LED TV, Before them was the LCD TV but their technology diffusion makes it possible to produce separate entities for each therefore making the technology diffusion distributed rather than 1 technology centered. These technologies are then, integrated depending the device that the company produces based on the customers’ demands. A notable example of this is the increase of production of the PS4 on western countries due to its success. However, the technology is still spread evenly, even if there are new technologies the old one will still be mass produced until such time that the technology becomes obsolete, much like black and white TV’s at late 80’s.

The company also has a lot of other devices. Notable examples of these are the Sony Hi-Fi Speakers, Sony Playstation and Sony Bravia, all three of which slightly share the same technology with a few different aspects and other add-on technology. The technologies they use is also used at other devices within the company. An example of this is having a Blu-Ray decoder for most all of their CD’s after the successful launch of the Blu-Ray. This makes the diffusion of their company dependant on the device. Examples of this technology are the LED TV, Blu-Ray and DSEE. All of which are introduced by the company.

All of these technologies are spread in the company, even if they are introduced to new technologies. The rate of when their technology changes is at most a decade, meaning that they can use this technology so long as the customer is satisfied with the quality of their products. But the advancement of technology still has not yet reached its limit so the company still has more potential to behold in the near future for the next generation of entertainment.

Activity 2 : Questions

1. Describe the “ideal” automated class registration system for a college or university. Compare this “ideal” system with what is available at your college or university.

- My Ideal registration system is that I can have the ability to actually manage my information and view my current status as a student, such as my current grades and if possible, class advancements or available subjects to enroll for the current semester. Although there is already one in the school, the problem is that the freedom of the users is still as of the moment, restricted. This will really help out irregular students like myself and I'm sure it can also help other student who feel confident with their abilities.

2. You have decided to open an Internet site to buy and sell used music CD's to other students. Describe the value chain for your new business.

- In opening a business like a CD retailing shop, it is important to always supply the product regularly. A CD shop is a product based business and since it is, you have 2 ways to handle the production. One is to manufacture the CD yourself (Which is impossible for students like us) and the second is to retail sell the CD's. The value chain will differ depending on the demand for the product and as such, there is no need for the business to constantly supply itself especially if the business does not have that much of a high demand. You may also make the transaction process easier like an on-site buying or if possible, a delivery (Not necessarily a good thing to implement in such a simple business such as a simple CD shop). Other than that, the value chain is not entirely that dependable but is easily managed unless you are planning to add a few extra service or a new product.

Value Chain :

Step 1 - Selling method (Either retail or wholesale)

Retail

If you are using retail then you should take note that the customers might not even be interested on your product and just go directly to the manufacturers since it is undeniable cheaper.

Wholesale

If you are going for wholesale then you should assure that you have enough to finance your business or sponsors. If not then you will have no choice but to create a CD manufacturing company or invest in one to sell your desired goods.

Step 2 - Warehousing

If you're starting small then a small warehouse is the only thing you need if not, none at all, since CD's are easily stored from simple appliances such as boxes or containers. Also take note of the demand, Its good to prepare extra supply but it is never good to hoard in supply especially if the demand is really low.

Step 3 - Transactions

Since the business is just a simple CD shop, then there is no need for complexities. Onsite transactions would be enough.

3. Discuss the potential use of virtual reality to enhance the learning experience for new automobile drivers. How might such a system operate? What are the benefits and potential drawbacks of such a system?

- Virtual reality is commonly used in today's modern age of technology, mostly on the field of education. A virtual reality system operates by simulating real life work such as surgery or a war tactics with the use of technology rather than implementing it in real life.

It can be a good way to learn especially if it involves safety such as driving or piloting a plane and because of this, learners using this technology can easily undergo trial and error process without the worry of accidents or hassles on equipment reassembly. Using a simulator though, is different from the real hands on experience, and this is where the disadvantage come in. The user might be slightly rattled by experiencing the real thing, which in some cases, lead to accidents.

Activity 1 : Case Study

Discussion : H1N1 Pandemic

1. The BI is used to gather information that was recorded by a system within the company or hospital. Using this technology they gathered information from the hospitals and processed it using the Business Intelligence System. After the gathering of data, the BI would detect abnormalities of the track records and process new information that informs a potential outbreak of a certain area as soon as possible.

2. As stated earlier in my previous answer, the BI system helps greatly for decision making. After processing data, the users can now determine the right action to take depending on the data gathered on the system. It is also used as a data collection tool for the users to provide statistics and analytics which is then later processed by other users.

Discussion : Creativity Value Chain

1. The business faced problems with their retail selling strategy because the users decided to buy products directly to the product producers instead of having to buy via retail to Creativity. This lead to a business loss and because of this, they had to shift their focus value chain on a different category and focused more on the fashion-oriented than the crafting oriented which became more popular than their normal value chain.

2. Creativity used various software’s such as Cognos and SmartForecast programs. Creativity used Cognos as a basis on what the current popular item is and they try to maintain profitability of these products by focusing its attention on these items. It is also used to develop a dashboard for the for corporate news so that latest updates is always shown to the corporate leaders and other partner company leaders. They also created an “Analytical Center of Excellence” to support their Idea and improve their companies communication skills for better company functionality and faster news instances.
